New religious movement (NRM) is a term given by scholars to groups that are new in so far as they became visible in their present form after World War II, and religious in so far as they address questions of ultimate concern. Although numbering several thousands world wide, most NRMs tend to have a small membership with a high turnover. While it is impossible to generalize about the movements, they do tend to be characterized in their early days by enthusiastic converts who are led by a charismatic leader. They also tend to see the world in unambiguously dichotomous terms. There are, however, several changes that are likely to take place within a generation or so, and which temper many of the movement's earlier extremes. Throughout history new religions have been greeted with antagonism, and the present wave of NRMs is no exception.

Advocating for acceptance of non-theistic religious exemption and privilege, The Satanic Temple has proven to be one of the nation’s most effective counter-balances against theocratic encroachments. The organization is best known for its ongoing legal efforts in two fields, to place a Satanic monument next to 10 Commandments monuments on public grounds, and to oppose reproductive rights restrictions nationwide (including Federal and State lawsuits in Missouri against the State’s mandatory 72-hour abortion waiting period).

Alexander Bard. (2016)

Swedish philosopher and burner Alexander Bard provides a lively introduction to Syntheism, a movement focused on how atheists can achieve the same feelings of community and awe experienced in traditional theistic religions.

True Believers. The Miracle Cure. (2015)

They call it the Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) and so-called “health ministers” are promoting it from B.C. to Newfoundland. They are members of the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, with avid followers around the globe. Church leaders, including Jim Humble, claim their product can protect you from “95% of the world’s diseases” including HIV/AIDS, cancer and autism. Canadians are ingesting it, spraying it, bathing in it and treating their autistic children with it. But Health Canada warns MMS, sometimes referred to as Chlorine Dioxide Solution or CDS, is an “unauthorized drug” that contains a dangerous bleaching agent.
